Garage Door Panel Replacement
You misjudged the last metre of the driveway and felt the bumper meet the door. The bottom section now carries a crease across most of its width.
Garage Door Panel Replacement
In plain words
Everything about a section replacement flows from knowing exactly which door you have. Two doors that look alike from the driveway can differ in section height, thickness, the shape of the joint where sections meet, where the hinges bolt on and how the skin is embossed. A new section has to share all of those details to seat cleanly against its neighbours. So the visit starts with a hunt for the manufacturer's label, usually on the edge of a section or on the track, followed by measurements and photographs. With that identity confirmed, the right section can be ordered with confidence rather than hope.
How the visit goesA stray ball went through one of the window panes in the top section. The glass is gone, the frame around it is cracked, and the steel beside the opening is pushed in, so the whole section is in question rather than one pane.

How the visit goes
Is a matching section still made?
Once the door is identified, the technician contacts the manufacturer or distributor to confirm that a section for that model, position and size can still be supplied, and in which colours. Door designs change over the years: embossing patterns, joint profiles and section heights get revised, and colours are retired. If the exact section is current, the order is straightforward. If the design has been discontinued, the conversation turns to the nearest current match and what the visual difference would be, or to replacing the door as a whole. The lead time for a made-to-order section is confirmed at the same time so you can plan.
Removing the damaged section
With the door secured and, where relevant, the springs unloaded, the hinges joining the damaged section to its neighbours are unbolted and the rollers slid out of the tracks. A section is wider than the opening between the tracks, so it comes out by tilting one end inward and walking it clear, occasionally after loosening a track bracket to gain a few millimetres. Two people handle a wide or insulated section because of its weight and its sharp edges. Once it is out, the technician checks the exposed edges of the sections above and below for damage that was hidden while the door was assembled.
Habits that keep sections out of harm's way
Most section damage comes from a handful of everyday moments, and small changes head them off. Wait until the door is fully open before pulling in or out; the sensor and lights on many openers make that easy to judge. Give the door a metre of clearance when parking a trailer or leaning bikes. If the driveway is the rink, a practice net or a sheet of plywood on the inside face of the lower sections takes the pucks instead of the steel. And if the door is ever struck, stop using it and have it looked at, because the visible dent is not always the whole story.

What affects the quote
Same fees day, night or weekend
1Condition of tracks and cables
An impact often nudges a track bracket or nicks a cable where it wraps the drum. Straightening or resetting track and replacing a cable are itemised so the section quote stays clear.
2Reinforcement struts
If the section had a strut that bent, or if a top or wide section is to gain one it never had, the strut and its fasteners appear as their own line on the quote.
3Access and working room
A section is wider than the door opening and is carried in and manoeuvred by two people. A cluttered garage, a low ceiling around the spring, or a tight driveway adds handling time.
Garage Door Panel Replacement: questions
Can a dent be repaired instead of replacing the section?
Sometimes. A shallow dent in the middle of a steel skin, away from joints and hinge points, can often be eased out or filled, sanded and painted. Damage that creases the metal, reaches a joint or an end stile, bends a hinge point, or kinks a strut affects how the section carries load as the door moves, and a new section is the sound repair there. The technician tells you which category your dent falls into.
Does a new section bring back the door's original strength?
A section ordered to the same specification carries the same steel gauge, core and reinforcement as the original, and it is fitted with sound hinges, new fasteners and, where the design calls for it, a strut. Combined with the alignment and balance work done at the same time, the door returns to operating the way its manufacturer designed it to. Where an original section had bowed for want of a strut, adding one leaves that part stiffer than before.
How should I look after the door after the section is replaced?
A little routine goes a long way. Each month, look along the hinges for loose screws, spin the rollers, and check the door's balance by lifting it by hand with the opener disconnected. Twice a year, apply a light garage-door lubricant to hinge pivots, roller stems and springs, and keep the tracks clean and dry. Rinse salt off the lower sections in spring, touch up chips, and keep the bottom seal clear of ice in winter.
